It's @5:00 AM on a Sunday in Brooklyn. Craig Gilner (played by Keir Gilchrist of "United States of Tara") is bicycling up to the entrance of a mental health clinic; this bright 16-year-old is stressed out from the demands of being a teenager. Before his parents (Lauren Graham [of "Parenthood"] and Jim Gaffigan [of "Away We Go"]) and younger sister are even awake, Craig checks himself into Argenon Hospital and is admitted by a psychiatrist. But the youth ward is temporarily closed -- so he finds himself stuck in the adult ward. One of the patients, Bobby (Zach Galifianakis of "The Hangover"), soon becomes both Craig's mentor and protégé. Craig is also quickly drawn to another 16-year-old displaced to the adult ward, the sensitive Noelle (Emma Roberts of the upcoming "Scream 4'), who just might make him forget his longtime unrequited crush Nia (Zoë Kravitz of the upcoming "Mad Max"). With a minimum five days' stay imposed on him by the adult ward's staff psychiatrist Dr. Eden Minerva (Academy Award nominee Viola Davis), Craig is sustained by friendships on both the inside and the outside as he learns more about life, love, and the pressures of growing up.

Diego Luna's Abel will open 7th January 2011. Opening at selected cinemas including Curzon Soho, Filmhouse Edinburgh, Bristol Watershed and Showroom Sheffield.

Diego Luna will be doing Q&As for Abel at the Curzon Soho on Friday 7th January and Filmhouse Edinburgh on Sunday 9th January 2011.

Executive produced by John Malkovich and Gael García Bernal.

Abel, a nine-year-old boy, has stopped talking since his father left home. One morning he starts to speak again, and appears to believe that he is the head of the family. As he oversees his siblings' homework and interrogates his sister's new boyfriend, no one dares to challenge this miracle. One day a man shows up at the door: his father.

Abel is a touching mix of comedy and tragedy, an exploration of the challenging social issue facing Mexican families, where paternal absenteeism is increasingly the norm as men leave their families behind to earn a better wage in the United States. Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal in 2005, together with producer Pablo Cruz, founded a film & TV production company in Mexico City focusing on projects grown in Latin America. Abel is one of those projects.

With a stunning performance from the first-time young actor Christopher Ruiz-Esparza, Abel recently played Cannes, Sundance & London Film Festivals, plus won the Horizontes Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival, and will come to UK cinemas in January.
